If i create an iron golem and exit the game i created it in will it
follow me into the next game?
When the iron golem dies do i get the item back?
If i unsummon the golem do i get the item back?
Does the golem recieve aruas bestowed by the item it was created out of
(such as pride or exile)?
Can i make a iron golem out of a runeword?

Pretty sure I got those answers right. Never really used IG's so just
going by what I've heard.

Just to add - this is true if you're playing a necro. If you're playing a
non-necro character, and create IG from an item (like Metalgrid amulet) it
will only last throughout the game you've created him in.
New game - new IG.

This is all very good information. Thanks to the OP for asking, too. I had
assumed the golem would disappear on game exit. How very nice that it
persists! Since IG is available as early as level 24 -- still in Normal
(I'm 2 levels away right now) -- I can create an IG from some outrageously
high unique and let the beast just mow down everything?

Sounds even easier than it already is.

Heh, until he gets mobbed and dies and you lose that unique forever and
ever. You can not give him potions, the only way to 'help' him if he gets
into trouble is to run away and hope he follows quickly enough.
It can indeed be a nice use for high level unique items that you will not
otherwise ever use, just do not get _too_ attached to him.
btw, yes, you can use items for IG that require level 80 when you are only
level 20.

I would not do it with anything I didn't already have a copy of. I found a
second Spineripper last night, and I wondered if the +Necro skills would
transfer to my necro, too.

Also, I made level 24 and started making them, and I noticed they are pretty
weak. I made the first one out of a Deathspade that had dropped for my
sorc, but it was toasted immediately. I bought a blue maul that seems to be
standing up better. Does durability play a role? I looked at Arreat
Summit, but there wasn't much info.

Durability doesn't seem to play a role as I use all my otherwise useless
ethereal uniques for golems. I know that if you make a golem out of
high-defence armour or shields they last longer than those made from
weapons. (Or at least they seem to).

Heh, sounds good. The only thing I hate about IGs is that sometimes you can
have a good one, had it for a while.... and it just vanishes. Probably got
too far away from it or something. It doesn't happen as much as it used to
but it still happens.

My favorite is a four-socket paladin shield with four perfect skulls. A
few extra resists against ranged attackers and even more returned damage
against monsters that get too close.

An Iron Golem made of Hwanin's Refuge Tigulated Mail is another option.
The 10% chance to cast lvl 3 Static Field when struck transfers to the
Golem and is a nice Addon to his Thorns Aura.

Yup that's exactly what I did with my last necro. I turned a
Flamebellow in to an Iron Golem soon as I had a chance and from there
on, I was more unstoppable than I already was. Try it... it's fun :-)

I like to use all those elite uniques that are ethereal and otherwise
useless. Makes for a nice, transparent golem. I made one out of an ethereal
WindHammer a while back and he lasted for ages. The CB was excellent.

Oh, that reminds me... I have an ethereal Baranar's Star... Hmmm.... I
can't think of how it would be of any other real use, short of popping a Zod
in it, which is quite unlikely to happen, for me... Wow.
