i recently started doing some Countess runs in hell, and i wonder which
way to go (or teleport) in the Black Marsh to find the tower?

Sometimes it's right behind you! Sometimes it's far across the water. The
water's always "down". Sometimes I have to run far to the "left", so I
think it pops up all over the place. I always check behind myself first.

In ever widening circles widdershins. Sometimes it works quickly, and
sometimes it doesn't. There doesn't seem to be a statistical bias as in
Mephisto's Durance.

I've wondered about it, too. Maphackers never asked this question on the
last ladder.

I always go in a straight line in one direction. If I hit a barrier, I
pretend to be a bullet and ricochet. Angle of incidence = angle of
reflectance, or something like that. It works for me and requires less
mouse moving than if I go out in spirals.

Sometimes, the tower is hard to find no matter what method you use.

I check a circle around the waypoint. If I don't find it inside a minute, I
skip to the next game.
That's why I like countess runners that don't need many preparations (like
raising minions).

I check a circle around the waypoint. If I don't find it inside a minute, I
skip to the next game.
That's why I like countess runners that don't need many preparations (like
raising minions).

well i guess not going the fastest way pays of :)
I the few runs i did in the last days i got the 2 best runes (Pul und
Io) from getting to the countess :)

I go in a straight line until I hit a wall, then follow the wall where I
can barely see it in the automap. That gives me a perimeter, and if I don't
run into the tower on the perimeter, I at least know the size/shape/layout
of the marsh so I can do efficient criss-cross patterns to cover the open
area in the least amount of time.

I haven't tried the spiral method, I'll have to play with that and see if
it seems faster...

I do something similar to this and generally find it fairly quickly.
Not often do I have to resort to running into a secondary interior
circuit. It does kinda annoy me when the river comes into the
equation.

I spiral out at first until I've gotten the area around the wp and
have run into a wall, then I might do a zig-zap spiral line, or a dot
matrix printer run over the map. Basically, I try and search the area
closest to the wp first because it's more annoying searching the
entire map to find it was 1 screen away from the wp than it is to
search the entire map and find it at the furthest corner.
