Discussion:
Diablo II in windowed mode, question?

Hi there,

I've recently been running Diablo II in windowed mode (added -w to the
shortcut) on one of my computers.

It's working pretty nice, but there is one thing nagging me: anytime I
click outside of the main Diablo II window (a rather tiny window on my
1680x1050 desktop), WinXP totally 'iconifies' the window, so I don't see
anything anymore.

Is there some special trick to be able to move the Diablo II window to one
corner of the screen, put it to the back, and then continue working in
another window, while the Diablo II window is still (even if only
partially) visible?

Regards, Patrick.

That is a nag. I don't know of a solution.

Try with -w -nohide parameters, with d2loader it works for sure, don't know
with the original exe (and i'm too lazy to check :)).

I don't use d2loader, and the addition of the -nohide parameter doesn't
change anything, unfortunately.

Hmmm. What d2loader version are you using, and is it 'Warden-proof'? I
don't feel like losing a set of D2/LOD keys over the iconification of a
window... ;)

I'm using the 1.12 version, which is not warden-proof anyway. But i've been
using it since july, along with a map hack, and nothing ever happened to my
accounts or cd-keys. Notice that I just use d2loader and map hack, and never
autoteleport, bot or duping hacks.

Hmmm, well, I wish you the best of luck. If/when Blizzard start banning
people for using hacks, they usually do this in batches. So if you haven't
been caught using cheats (shame on you BTW), don't think you won't.

However, the last mass-banning is, AFAIK, quite a while ago...

So, I presume that you consider map hack a cheat (shame on me using it).
Well... to me the game would be just too boring, if in every run I had to
find the way to Countess, to Meph, to Baal, etc. I'd rather run the risk to
be banned than playing without maphack. After all it's just a game, and a
game has to entertain me. So, if I have fun playing Diablo only when i see
the maps of places i've already been to, I use map hack. And mind that I'm
not causing harm to you, if we trade and i give you a Ist rune dropped by
the Countess, be sure it's legit at 100%. The day Blizzard will ban the
accounts/keys using MH i will stop playing Diablo, it's pretty simple.
And by the way, isn't it just dumb to have the fog of war in stages you have
already cleared? I mean, where's the fun in spending minutes finding the
right way? It is ok when you're questing, but boring to death when you're
mfing, IMHO.

I just gave you my opinion on you using MapHack. I have no real problems
with you using it (but I do have an opinion about it), but in my opinion
it adds nothing. Going down dead ends in the WSK, to give an example, is
actually not too bad, since the entire area is mlvl85, so good stuff can
drop, and it also gives decent experience, even when you're at clvl93 or
94.

I don't use it, won't use it, and I just hope you know what you're doing.

Trammel can probably better inform you on the do's and don't with regard
to maphack; I'm not sure revealing entire levels and/or acts (which is
what you're apparently doing) is 100% safe, but he can probably advise you
there better...

Patrick, I know what I am doing, and let me say once again that Diablo for
me is just a game, nothing less and nothing more. So if they decide to ban
the MH I have no problems with it, I'll play in single mode (where there is
no fog of war, unless you switch from one difficulty to another) or just
spend my "game time" differently. And I don't care too to detect when warden
is off or on, the game is not a matter of life and death; on the contrary, I
find stupid that it's not always on.
Anyway, isn't it you who's not 100% against duped HRs? Shame on thee!!! ;)

I must say I do not understand your objection to what you call 'fog of
war' but which is, if I understand you correctly, the way some of the
levels in Diablo II are randomly generated?

That's actually part of the fun; every visit is 'new' (with variable
values for 'new' of course ;)).

I must say I found the way Single Player worked here (no changes to the
layout unless you changed difficulty) to be exceptionally boring.

Well, if what Trammel reported is correct, it just means Blizzard doesn't
give anything about Diablo II anymore. Analyzing Warden reports probably
involves some time, time which Blizzard does not feel warranted to spend,
anymore. Logical, but indeed too bad. And it probably also explains why
99% of the baalruns on B.Net are handled by bots.

I had that coming, I suppose. ;) However, playing the game without MapHack
is entirely possible, and changes nothing to the basics of it. Playing
without HRs is also possible, and I finished the quests with my 4 player
chars without using any HRs (didn't find one myself either,
unfortunately).

However, I know of no way of acquiring HRs without trading for them
(either in-game for Ists, or via d2jsp using fg), so if/when I want to
upgrade my gear using HR-based stuff, that's the only route I can take.

We're probably using similar arguments to rationalise our use of MapHack
or traded HRs, respectively. You are, of course, free to have an opinion
on my use of traded (and most probably duped) HRs.

Try searching for a freeware that forces windows to "stay on top".
There's got to be something out there.

Ahhh, here we go:

Scroll down to "PushPin". Untested by me. Maybe that'll stop it from
minimizing. <shrugs>

Nice find, but the base of the site was apparently last updated on August
1st, 2004. The 'PushPin' utility is also for Win 95/98/NT; I feel a bit
wary using/installing it in WinXP...

Also Googled around a bit, and only ran into d2loader which indeed offers
a '-nohide' option. However, I do not want to risk my CD-keys. :(

XP is just NT5 with a new name (basically)...
...XP runs almost all NT (NT4) stuff.

Im using:
* D2Loader
* RedVex
* Aww ("Archens Warden Watcher" plugin for RedVex)
* AutoTeleport (Plugin for D2Loader)
* AwesomO (MF/Lvl Bot that uses RedVex)
I also have lolwut3b maphack but rarely use it as AutoTeleport is much
better/faster.

I've been using hacks every time I play, and I run 4 accounts at once when I
rush my own mules to hell, etc...
...I also develop hacks for RedVex (based on reading, filtering and
injecting packets between the game & bNet) under another pseudoname and can
tell you for sure that warden is currently disabled and not sending any
packets so cant detect anything atm.

If you do use hacks though... its upto you to make sure that your running a
warden-watcher and proxying your traffic, etc yourself. You also need to
keep your ear to the ground for the trembling caused by masses of noobs
going "WTF?!?!!!! We all got banned!!!" ...and act accordingly (normally
telling them its got nothing to do with the hacks your still using).

Well, I might have given it a try, but there is another complication:
PushPin adds a new context menu-item to the menu of a window. However, the
Diablo II window has no menu, it also has no icon of any type in it's left
upper corner. So I'm not even going to be able to activate it for the
Diablo II window.

I have a program that I wrote for ConquerOnline a while back which seems to
work with Diablo2.

It allows you to move windows around, maximise them, minimize, force window
resize, etc. It works with Diablo2 if you dont have D2 window selected...
so all you gotta do is have another window infront of D2 while you make it
jump up.

I'll go edit it tonight and make an installer, etc...
...then upload it somewhere with the sourcecode so you can compile a new
version if you dont trust my compiled version.

You can use that on any window - not just Diablo2 (resizing calculator
window, etc too)

Thanks for the offer, but don't spend too much time on it, yet. From the
experiences up till now, it looks like it is more of a generic Windows XP
specific problem (how to keep a window from iconifying, and how to fix
this for a window which does not have a button in the titlebar).

So, I will also be fishing for a solution in a more Windows-oriented
newsgroup, and hopefully be able to dredge up a reference to an (existing)
utility which does just that...

Creating an installer requires very little work (clicking "Add new >

The program is written but as it was written for just myself, the boxes are

I'll do the edits anyways, shove it up on some sharing sites and post links.

Its upto you if you wanna try it or not... and if you wanna run the

Things to consider:
* Make sure to type the Diablo2 window name (in tray at bottom) in and click
"Get State" before doing anything.
* Dont click the D2 window then click off it as that will trigger D2s
minimise function again.
* Keep a window "in front" or "above" Diablo2 so that it doesnt become the
"top most" window.

By the way:
Some computer programs (especially older ones) hid debug textboxes,
datagrids, etc outside the normal view of users so stretching some program
windows may reveal intentionally hidden sections of the program... if so,
dont play around with them or it may crash their program!

Its upto you if you wanna try it or not... and if you wanna run the
installer/program or compile your own copy using VB.net Express (free
version) if you dont trust my programs :)
Installer: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=JYKLLAWM
Sourcecode: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=FPMHGFD3
* Allows moving, resizing, minimising, maximising, hiding, etc of all
windows on your computer
* Windows are targeted by their window name (in tray at bottom).
Sourcecode is provided incase you dont trust the installer to be
trojan/virus free.
Sourcecode language is Visual Basic 6 and may need the VB6 runtime files
from microsoft (most computers already have them).
Cool & Thanks. I downloaded it, will hopefully be able to check it later
this evening... I'll let you know.

Regards, Patrick.

np.

The program was mainly made for myself and a few friends to enable us to fix
the ConquerOnline windows that kept breaking away from their title bars. It
was to allow us to realign the bars with their windows and bring back
windows that had jumped offscreen, as they have no window-menu that could be
acessed with Alt+Space.

I'd be interested in any feedback you have but please keep in mind that this
was never made with the intention of public use so is completely
"unpolished".

Another note:
Do not make windows hidden with this as there is no way to unhide them
without their window name being visable.

This may be fixed in a future version if enough people want it... and then
you'd select the window using its pID (Process ID) or click it in a list of
every window active on your computer (from enumerating all visable and
hidden windows on the desktop).

Unfortunately, I've been unable to test this out yesterday-evening. But as
soon as I do, I'll let you know my feedback.
