Discussion:
Rerolling with chipped nerfs Phase Blades?
(too old to reply)

Hi all,

After finding a magic Phase Blade, I tried to socket it with the well
known sword-and-three-chippies cubing recipe.

The result was only two or even one socket, and miserable mods. As the
game was SP, I could check the item level of the blade with ATMA, and
was shocked.

The level had dropped to 25, and wouldn't change.

I found another magic phase blade and tried again.

Check with ATMA before reroll: level 88

Check with ATMA after reroll: level 25

Is this a result of the patch 1.10, or had it ever been like this?

Ah, Information. A good, too valuable these days, to give it away, just
so, at no cost.

This is a change introduced in 1.10. See the relevant pages at Blizzard's
site. Quoting:

3 Chipped Gems + 1 Magic Weapon = Socketed Magic Weapon
This adds sockets to a magic weapon. The original magic weapon properties
will be removed (rerolled) when the new weapon is created. If you use this
formula with a weapon that is not normally socketed such as a Javelin,
this recipe will create a new magical weapon without any sockets. ilvl=25
magic weapon with 1-2 sockets.

3 Flawless Gems + 1 Magic Weapon = Socketed Magic Weapon
This adds sockets to a magic weapon. The original magic weapon properties
will be removed (rerolled) when the new weapon is created. If you use this
formula with a weapon that is not normally socketed such as a Javelin,
this recipe will create a new magical weapon without any sockets. ilvl=30
magic weapon with 1-2 sockets.

So there are two recipes and both actually pretty much create crap. They
fixed this because everyone was rerolling their Colossus Swords/Blades
with the 3-chippie formule, to get one of those with the Cruel prefix and
3 sockets. This is no longer possible.

I don't actually of any reason to use one of these recipes; maybe for a
starting character, to get something with a nice ilvl 30/25 mod, and a few
sockets?

Regards,

Patrick.

In 1.09 the ilvl dropped to 30 too when you rerolled swords, but the
affixes seemed to be independent from that as you still could get a
cruel, I can't recall the explanation though.

Oh dear, now you're overasking me. Maybe something to do with the 1.09
cube recipe using the 'instrinsic' level of the weapon to determine the
mods, instead of the 'raw' ilvl?

Maybe someone else knows more, or try to find an old 1.09 chippie reroll
guide to see if they go into the gory details...? ;)

It has to do with the qlvl (quality lvl) of the item in question and is
involved with what affixes are available. Since the old chippie formula sets
ilvl to 30, you need a qlvl of 8x (cant remember exact number), which is why
only 6 of the elite swords were "elligible" to get a cruel mod.

So the three flawless gems + magic weapon should still be able to get cruel
(+ good suffix if you're lucky) and 1-2 sockets.

Somebody with more knowledge of the game could probably even tell you what
the qlvl of various weapons (non-swords) is.

Oh, and in case it isn't clear, qlvl is intrinsic to item type and never
changes, afaik.

BK

ps. It's kinda funny, this "nerf" to the cube formulas is/was totally
unnecessary with the other changes in 1.10

Weird, last night I found a magic thresher, item level 58, and thought I'd
re-roll with 3 chippies just for fun, and it ended up with "Soldier's" mods,
2 sockets and item level 53. Maybe the change to item level 25 after rolling
only applies to certian weapons?
