Where do you find Ethereal 6 sockets sword, pike, etc.?

Only by opening chests and barrel, etc. or merchants may also sell them?
Maybe a simple answer will be that merchants never sell Ethereal items, I
don't even know that.

Merchants don't sell ethereal items at all, and if you sell them
an ethereal item it will simply disappear. So you have to actually
find them.

I would imagine it would be far easier to find an ethereal unsocketed
item of the type you want then to stick it in the hell socket quest to
get the 6 sockets. You can always rush a new char for the socket quests
again. Not sure if normal or nightmare socket quests give 6, was never
clear on that (95% of the time I use them to 1-socket uniques anyway...)

I think the difficulty of the quest doesn't matter, it's the item level that
matters (which in turn is tied to *where* you find the item). In general
items found in hell will get max sockets.

Great, I always socketed uniques that add 1 socket only so I didn't knew
some Hell weapons could receive 6 socket ith the quest.

In Act 1, Tamoe Highlands, you'll find a cave called The Pit which
gets overlooked by most people in their haste to get to the Monastery.
That Pit seems to have one of the highest concentrations of socketed
items in the game -- and quite a few uniques and set items. Of course
it's only Act 1, but in Hell good things can drop there. Take a run
through it sometime, but come prepared because it can get very
crowded.

I found my first six socket ethereal weapon today in act2 Hell, in the
Dry Hills. It was a maul though.

Gambling won't get you this, because...

...you can't win a maul.
