I have just started playing Diablo II : LOD and am as of now a level 19
amazon in act 2. My backpack is stocked with charms ( mostly adding
lightning / posion damage), and by stocked I mean atleast 50% of the
space is blocked with charms. This leaves very little space for potions
and other items (I have started placing extra rings / amulets in the
horadric cube).

My question is how many charms in the inventory are enough ? The small
charms are rarely adding any advantage to the and taking up valuable
space.

This totally depends how you play. If I can get away with it, the more
space the better for my magic find characters. On my main Hammerdin I
have 4 columns free to pick up items. But for other characters I can
only afford to have 2 columns free and feel comfotable. For my Uber
Tristram Smiter, I only have 2 spaces free to pick up the torch.

On early chars, and if you're paying untwinked, it's generally nice to
pick up a lot of stuff and sell it for gold, but again it depends how
patient you are. If you have a book of town portals and don't mind
going back to town every 20 seconds then great. But if you're like me,
I like to have a few more columns free. My mid level characters who
have all their items however and I'm just playing through the game will
stock up on charms and only have 2 columns free.

It's really up to you and how you like playing. If you can survive with
no charms, wonderul, but most people learn to strike their own balance
I suppose.

In the beginning of a new character I save all charms till space becomes
an issue. After that I drop/sell any x-gold charms, most poison unless
its at least 50/5, low lifers, etc... and based on what I find new,
throw out the least needed or trade/give to a newbie. I try and keep
at least a 2x4 space free in inventory so I can pick up any single item.

Yes its always a tradeoff as to what to keep. I generally go with
charms that are not part of my main attack. Example... If my character
uses fire, then I go with cold charms to balance out those times when
the baddies are fire immune.

I don't carry any charms. I run out of space quick enough picking up
everything else I want. It's gotten to the point where I just leave
charms in the wilderness unidentified. My inventory space is much more
valuable, to me, than any bonus a charm can give me.

One exception is magic find charms. When/If I find some of those I may
keep them in my inventory, but probably only after I've maxed out the
MF on my other equipment. A second exception is the charms that I know
other people might use. Since they aren't useful to me, I don't mind
picking up and giving away nice charms to nice people.

In my inventory, I have a tome of ID, a tome of TP, a 2x4 area open to
pick up things, and every other slot is filled with charms. TP scrolls
are cheap, if I find 3 items I want to keep/sell, I make 3 trips to
town :)

If the charms aren't any good I don't keep them. For most characters I
have a cube, with 4 scroll of identities in the cube and 4 scrolls of
town portals on my belt #4 slot. If there's a good item on the ground
I just hit inventory button and then pick it up so I can put it in my
cube. With two slots of Full Rejuvenates and another slot with
Antidote, Thawing and/or Stamina potions(Depending on char). Of course
this is only at the end character set up before that I have at least a
2x4 space with a cube and two tomes above that then the rest is charms,
depending on what good charms I have.
